How to Make a Logo Background Transparent

Part of the guide: Transparent background

A logo with a white box around it looks unprofessional on a website, a slide or a product mockup. Making the background transparent is a small job, but the best route depends on what file you have.

Step 1: Look for the original file

If a designer made your logo, there is usually a vector version (SVG, AI, EPS or a vector PDF). Vector files are made of shapes, not pixels, so they have no background to remove and stay sharp at any size. Ask for it or search your old project folders before you edit a pixel image. If you have the vector file, export a PNG or SVG with a transparent background and you are done.

Step 2: If you only have a pixel image (JPG or PNG)

Pixel logos come in two situations:

  • A PNG that already has transparency. Check by placing it on a coloured background. If you see a white box, it is not transparent.
  • A JPG or a PNG with a solid background. The background has to be removed.

Logos are not like photos. They have flat colours and sharp edges, which suits colour-based removal.

  1. Open the logo in an editor with a colour-based selection (magic wand or "select by colour").
  2. Select the background colour and delete it.
  3. Zoom in on the edges and fix any leftover pixels.
  4. Export as PNG.

If the logo has gradients, shadows, photos inside it or a background that is not one flat colour, an AI background remover can be a faster start. Many logos are a mix, so try both and compare.

Why JPG logos are harder

JPG compresses an image by blurring detail, which leaves faint noise around sharp edges. A colour tool then sees many slightly different shades of white instead of one white, and leaves ragged edges or specks. If you can, start from a PNG or the original instead of a JPG.

BG Remover Pro is built for photos, but it also cuts out logos that have a clear shape. Drag the file in, process it and check the before/after slider. For simple flat logos on a plain background, a colour-based tool can give cleaner edges, so use whichever looks better. It runs only on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 14 or later, and you can process 20 images free first.

Check the result properly

A transparent logo can look fine on white and fail everywhere else. Before you use it:

  1. Place it on a dark background. Look for a white or grey fringe around the edges.
  2. Place it on a coloured background that matches where you will use it.
  3. Zoom to 200%. Rough edges show up at that size.
  4. Test it small. Resize to the size it will appear at, such as a website header.

Keep the size and format right

  • Do not enlarge a small logo. Making a pixel logo bigger makes it blurry. If you need a bigger version, ask for the vector file or redraw it.
  • Export PNG for pixel logos with transparency. Use SVG if the logo is vector and the place you are using it supports it.
  • Keep your original so you can start again if the first attempt is not clean. For file formats, see PNG vs JPG for transparent images.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a logo background transparent?

Use the original vector file if you have one. Otherwise remove the background from the pixel image with a colour-based tool or an AI background remover, then export as PNG.

Why does my transparent logo still have a white box?

The file probably still has a solid white background, or it was saved as JPG, which cannot store transparency. Re-export as PNG after removing the background.

What is the best format for a logo with a transparent background?

SVG for vector logos where it is supported, and PNG for pixel logos. JPG cannot be transparent.

Can I make a low-resolution logo transparent?

Yes, but the result stays low resolution and rough edges are more visible. Ask for the original file if you need a larger or sharper version.

Need to do this for a whole folder?

BG Remover Pro is the Mac app we make. It removes backgrounds in bulk, on your Mac, with nothing uploaded, and you can try 20 images free. See pricing or what it does.
