How to Convert a JPG to a Transparent PNG
Part of the guide: Transparent background
Many "JPG to PNG" tools only change the file type. The picture inside is the same, background included. A transparent PNG needs one extra step: removing the background.
Why converting alone does not work
JPG stores every pixel as a colour, with no transparent option. When you convert it to PNG, each pixel is still a solid colour, including the white or coloured background. The new file can hold transparency, but nothing in it is transparent yet.
So the real task is two steps: remove the background, then save as PNG.
How to do it
- Open the JPG in a background remover or an image editor.
- Remove the background. For a flat, plain background a colour-based selection can work (see removing a white background). For photos, people, products or detailed edges, an AI background remover is usually cleaner.
- Check the result on a dark background, so you can see any fringe.
- Export as PNG. In some tools you must choose "keep transparency" or untick a "flatten" option.
- Test it. Place the file on a coloured background in your slides, website or design tool. If you see a box, the background is still there.
Things to know about JPG sources
- JPG is lossy. It already blurs fine detail, and a PNG made from it will not restore that detail. Start from the highest quality original you have.
- Compression noise around edges makes colour-based removal ragged. An AI remover often copes better.
- File size. PNG files can be larger than the JPG you started with. If size matters, WebP also supports transparency in smaller files. See PNG vs JPG for transparent images.
Many JPGs at once
If you have a folder, doing this one image at a time is slow. A batch tool lets you drop in the whole folder and export every result as PNG. BG Remover Pro is the Mac app we make for this: it reads PNG, JPEG and WebP, removes the backgrounds in one run and exports PNG (with transparency), JPEG or WebP, or a ZIP of everything. It runs only on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 14 or later, and the first 20 images are free.
Quick checklist
- The background has been removed, not just the file type changed.
- You exported as PNG (or WebP), not JPG.
- You checked the edges on a dark background.
- You kept the original JPG in case you need to start again.
Frequently asked questions
Can I make a JPG transparent?
Not as a JPG. JPG cannot store transparency. Remove the background and save the result as PNG or WebP.
Why is my converted PNG still white in the background?
The conversion changed only the file type. The white pixels are still in the image, so the background has to be removed first.
Is a PNG converted from a JPG better quality?
No. A PNG made from a JPG cannot recover detail the JPG already lost. It only avoids losing more.
How do I convert many JPGs to transparent PNGs?
Use a batch background remover that exports PNG, so the whole folder is processed in one run.
Need to do this for a whole folder?
BG Remover Pro is the Mac app we make. It removes backgrounds in bulk, on your Mac, with nothing uploaded, and you can try 20 images free. See pricing or what it does.
