Is It Safe to Upload Photos to an Online Background Remover?

Part of the guide: Background remover

Most online background removers work the same way: your photo is sent to a server, processed there, and the result is sent back. That is convenient, and it also means a copy of your image exists somewhere you do not control. Whether that matters depends on the photo and the service.

What actually happens when you upload

  1. Your image travels over the internet to the service's servers.
  2. The service processes it, usually with an AI model running on its hardware.
  3. The result is sent back to you.
  4. What happens next is up to the service: it may delete the file straight away, keep it for a while, or keep it longer.

None of that is necessarily bad. It is just the part you cannot see, so it is worth checking.

A checklist to use before you upload

Read the service's privacy policy and terms. Look for plain answers to these:

  • Do they store my photos, and for how long? "Deleted after processing" and "kept for 30 days" are very different.
  • Can I delete my photos myself? Is there a way, or do you have to ask?
  • Are my photos used to train AI models? Look for wording about "improving our services" or "training".
  • Who else can see them? Check for third-party processors, partners or advertising.
  • Is the connection secure? The page should be on https, and the service should say how it protects uploads.
  • Is there an account? Accounts can tie photos to your identity.
  • Do the photos carry location data? Many photos contain EXIF data, such as GPS location and camera details. Check whether the service strips it, or remove it yourself first.

If you cannot find clear answers, treat the service as if it keeps the file.

When you should not upload

Think twice, or process locally, if the photos are:

  • Client work covered by a contract or NDA.
  • Unreleased products or designs.
  • Photos of other people, especially children, staff or customers.
  • Documents or IDs.
  • Anything private that you would not want stored by a third party.

The alternative: process on your own computer

If the processing happens on your device, the photo never travels anywhere. Options include built-in tools such as Preview or Finder's Remove Background action on a recent Mac (see how to remove a background on Mac), and apps that run the AI locally.

BG Remover Pro is one of those, and it is our own app, so take that as a disclosure. It removes backgrounds on your Mac, works offline, and does not send your photos to a server. It needs the internet only to activate your licence key once, and for the object remover's AI model, which downloads once on first use. It runs only on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 14 or later, so on Windows or an Intel Mac you need a different tool. We describe what the app does with data in the privacy policy.

So, is it safe?

For a casual picture of your lunch, a reputable online tool is probably fine. For anything sensitive, confidential or belonging to someone else, the safest photo is one that never leaves your computer. Either way, check the policy and do not rely on a free tool's silence.

Frequently asked questions

Do online background removers keep my photos?

It depends on the service. Some delete files right after processing and some keep them for a period. Read the privacy policy for the retention period and whether you can delete photos yourself.

Are my uploaded photos used to train AI?

Some services say they may use uploads to improve their models, and others say they do not. Look for the wording in the privacy policy, and if it is unclear, assume they might.

What is the safest way to remove a background from a sensitive photo?

Process it on your own device with a tool that works offline, so the photo never leaves your computer.

Does BG Remover Pro upload my photos?

No. It processes on your Mac and works offline. It needs the internet once to activate your licence key, and once to download the object remover's model on first use.

Need to do this for a whole folder?

BG Remover Pro is the Mac app we make. It removes backgrounds in bulk, on your Mac, with nothing uploaded, and you can try 20 images free. See pricing or what it does.
